Our nervous system

Our nervous system

The autonomic nervous system (ANS), is a branch of our nervous system that is controlled largely by our midbrain, aka our subconsciousness.

This is also a part of our brain responsible for PAIN

It is made up of two parts:

Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)

Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)

SNS is responsible for our ‘fight, flight, or freeze’ responses, while PNS is ‘rest and digest’.

On a daily basis, these two systems come into play alternatively, depending on what activities we are doing, or how we are feeling physically and mentally.

For example, when you are at the gym working a sweat, the SNS takes over and pumps blood into your muscles. That evening when it’s nearing bedtime, your PNS will kick in to repair your body from the workout.

Our body needs to be able to switch between the two efficiently to be able to maintain good physical and mental health.

If we are stuck in our Fight and Flight mode, our internal organs will not be able to function properly, sleep will be disrupted, and many symptoms may start to arise.

One of the best way to get ourselves out of this mode is exercise. Exercising release a concoction of hormones that will then shift us back into the Rest and Digest mode.

In other words, exercise is the best medicine for stress.
